Where is Canada's Role In Afghanistan Going?
Related to country: Afghanistan

Most recently I read an article in the National Post where the current opposition MPs are pushing the Harper government to disclose more details about its expanding use of private contractors in Afghanistan.

Knowing that $42-million worth of contracts have been given to private contractors in Afghanistan which have not been disclosed and with a CanWest News Service analysis having determined that some of the contracts have been awarded to former warlords with close ties to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, this clearly shows that Canada should not be operating this mission since they themselves could be funding the exact problem they are trying to fight against.

Use of Afghanistan contractors questioned

Millions Spent

Andrew Mayeda, CanWest News Service Published: Monday, November 26, 2007

OTTAWA - Opposition MPs are pushing the Harper government to disclose more details about its expanding use of private contractors in Afghanistan.

The federal government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years to hire contractors to assist the Afghanistan mission in various roles, from protecting military installations to providing logistical support.

But opposition critics say the government has not adequately explained how this money is being spent, and who is receiving it.

Making the Move To England, UK

So I have finally made my big move over to England, UK. I arrived yesterday even though I was asked to come over in October, and with the length of time it took to pass through immigration I really don't think I will be doing it to often. With being involved in so much work on Prince Edward Island it took awhile to wrap up things to be able to depart. I am going to be working with Peace Child International on various projects. Helping advise on their website, educational materials, and pitching in on school presentations that the other interns do. I will also will be helping develop some video content and materials to help Celebrate their 25th year. I will also lend a hand with the upcoming 4th World Youth Congress which will be held to celebrate International Youth Day, August 12th.

War Child Canada's Unique Fundraising Idea "Benefit Busking"

We’ve had Live Aid, Live8 and a plethora of other charity concerts in between, but on October 25th, Raine Maida ushered in a new era – the benefit busk. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and a couple of cardboard signs, Raine took to the streets of Toronto for a marathon all day show on street corners around the city.

The aim of the day was to raise $30,000 so that War Child Canada could rebuild a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Twelve hours later he was over two thirds of the way there, having raised an astonishing $22,000.

"Toronto is truly a great city," he said, after finally calling it a day at 9pm, "I have been humbled by everyone's generosity"

Raine Maida has long been a supporter of War Child Canada, performing at concerts and donating songs to both War Child CDs. He has visited both Iraq and Darfur with the charity but has yet to go to Congo.

“I’m hoping to go and see the finished school. The great thing about this campaign is it’s so tangible. I’ll be able to show people exactly where their money has gone.”

“We’re just over one classroom short. I know of at least one concert that’s been organized to help boost the total. Hopefully a few other bands can get involved and we’ll have the full amount in no time.”

Shortwave, Opopo and Brigitte will be playing Supermarket in Toronto on 15th November to raise money for the Congo School campaign. Tickets are $7 with all proceeds donated to War Child Canada.
